„Blanchisserie, or Žvėrynas – Užupis“

The novel is set in a cartographically recognizable landscape of Vilnius, substantiated by many imaginary – fantastical — features. The main area of narrative action is Žvėrynas and Užupis, the two historically and geographically opposing districts of Vilnius, each representing a different set of spatial and social variations of the city. Overall, the novel depicts Vilnius in a schematic and familiar way. Absent elaborate descriptions of different urban locations, the totality of the city is summed up by common place-names. Each place name serves as a specific key to a concrete and recognizable landmark, guiding readers through the fictionalized depiction of Vilnius. The protagonist’s relationship with the city is mapped out by his interaction with various people rather than by him visiting specific locations or architectural sites. The main street of Vilnius – Gediminas Prospect- connecting the two districts (Užupis and Žvėrynas) is portrayed as being distant and “foreign” to the mental map of the protagonist.
